Evesham Wood Vineyard takes its name from England's picturesque Vale of Evesham. Our small, subterranean winery produces four varieties in its 5,000 case annual production, from grapes grown on our 12 acre estate vineyard, "Le Puits Sec", and other nearby vineyards, predominantly in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA. All wines bearing the "Le Puits Sec" designation are produced from certified organically grown fruit. Our guiding philosophy calls for traditional techniques with little or no intervention. For example, we produce no wines from irrigated vineyards. Likewise, our Pinot Noir and vineyard-designated Chardonnays are bottled without filtration. This approach allows the wines to best express their soil and micro-climate origins, and, along with proprietary yeast strains, give Evesham Wood wines their distinctive character.

Vineyard Profile:
***Evesham Wood Winery's 12 acre Le Puits Sec Vineyard is located just 4 miles northwest of downtown Salem, on an east-facing bench of the Eola-Amity Hills above and just west of the Willamette River. The vineyard is predominantly east-facing, with a portion of the south side of the vineyard having a southeastern exposure. The bottom of the vineyard lies at ca. 300' elevation and the top at ca. 415', with the slope averaging less than 5% throughout the vineyard.
***There are three distinct soil types which occur in the vineyard: 1) roughly the lower 25% of the vineyard (east side) is planted on Woodburn silt clay loam (alluvial) 2) the middle section of the vineyard - ca. 35% is Jory silt loam (basalt-derived), and 3) the upper 40% of the vineyard is Nekia silt clay loam (basalt).
***The older planting of predominantly Pommard clone Pinot Noir (1986) and Chardonnay Dijon 95 (1997) are in the Nekia section of the vineyard. Younger (1992-94) PinotNoir Dijon clones 113,114 & 115 are in the Jory soil section. All other white varietals(start 1986) plus the 1996 planting of Pinot Noir Dijon 777 are situated on mostly Woodburn series soil with some Jory soil upslope.
***The vines are head-trained and cane-pruned: double Guyot training is employed for all white varietals (7'X 6' spacing), and single Guyot for Pinot Noir (7'X 4', 7'X 3' and 6'X 3' spacing). Vine heads are trained to ca. 20" from the ground and top of canopy is hedged to ca. 5 1/2'.
***Le Puits Sec vineyard obtained organic certification from Oregon Tilth in 2000. It is also Salmon Safe certified, and a member of the Deep Roots Coalition, an advocacy group for non-irrigation (dry farming) of vineyards in the producing years.
***The most typical characteristics of Pinot Noir wines produced from Le Puits Sec are: strong (violets and spice) aromatics, a flavor profile tending toward plum fruits with secondary flavors of white pepper and dried flowers, and a silkiness in texture - overall more in a restrained, elegant style wine than a dark-fruited extracted style.
