CALAMITY HILL VINEYARD & FARM

AMITY, OREGON

Calamity Hill Vineyard and Farm is located on Walnut Hill at the northern end of the Eola-Amity Hills AVA.  Our small vineyard and olive planting are on a mostly north-facing slope at an elevation of 480 to 530 feet. We enjoy a view of the Willamette Valley with the Cascades and Mount Hood in the distance.

Our tasting room is open three weekends a year (Labor Day, Memorial Day and one other) and by appointment (503-435-9868).

Calamity Hill is among the smallest vineyards producing wine for sale in Oregon. We are so small we don’t talk about acreage planted.  Instead, we focus on each grapevine, 1910 in total. Our vineyard was planted in May of 2005, and covers just 1.75 acres of land.

We tend 500 Pinot Gris vines, all 152 clone on 101-14 rootstock. Our Pinot Noir, totaling 1410 vines, consists of five combinations of rootstock and clones. Pommard and 777 clones were grafted onto 3309 and 101-14 rootstocks, and the 115 clone is on 3309 rootstock. Rows are planted north-south. The property slopes gently to the North and East. Our farm is made up of entirely deep Jory soils, ideal for dry farming pinot noir and pinot gris grapes. We planted 600 olive trees in May of 2007 and harvested our first crop of in the Fall of 2010.  Though we have planted over 1900 trees, we have only about 450 that have survived the western Oregon climate.  We are learning which varieties are the toughest and through natural selection are sure we will eventually have success as one of Oregon’s first Olive growers.  We have our olives milled at the Oregon Olive Mill and sell our small production of extra virgin olive oil only through our tasting room. Come see the largest corkscrew in Oregon and tour our gardens and koi pond.

At Calamity Hill Vineyard and Farm, we are constantly striving to be responsible stewards of our beautiful property, and in 2008 we installed 84 photovoltaic solar panels to create a 14.2 KW array. Our system was activated in December 2008. Our goal is to provide over half of our total energy needs from the sun. We welcome private tastings and tours – contact us at natch4@gmail.com or 503-435-9868.
