Aeolus is a small, productive AVA vineyard property seated at the eastern base of Willamette Valley’s Eola-Amity Hills. Vine rows rest on a gentle slope with north-south orientation. Our vines are an average 18 years of age, planted on phylloxera-resistant rootstock. Aeolus is carefully farmed using organic techniques, with the objective of eventually attaining organic certification. Our vineyard takes pride in being amongst the first to plant Tempranillo vines in the Valley. Aeolus takes its name from the Greek God of Wind, who regularly unleashes his influence in this stretch of the Valley. Recent harvests have supplied high quality Pinot Noir and Tempranillo fruit to both Stangeland Vineyards and Landmass Wines. Vineyard management is provided by our friends at Arguelles Vineyard Services LLC.

The signature block is called the “SMP” block… Sister Mary Paule was our aunt who served the children of South Africa for over 60 years building orphanages and schools.

Antica Terra Vineyard

Website: anticaterra.com

Antica Terra is an 11-acre vineyard located on a rocky hillside in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA. The first vines were planted here in 1989 in a clearing within the oak savannah. The geology of the site is extremely unusual; in this place, the remains of a far older prehistoric seabed rise to the surface, leaving the vines to struggle, without topsoil, amongst a fractured mixture of sandstone sown with fossilized oyster shells.

3,500 vines were planted in March of 2007 on 3 acres. Soil is Jory. Elevation is 900’ at the top, down to 700’ at the bottom. Pinot Gris clone is 152 – 1 acre is planted at the top elevation. Pinot Noir clones are 667/777 – 2 acres are planted at the lower elevation. We got our first harvest in 2009. In 2010 the birds ate everything – we now net. In 2011 the grapes never ripened. 2012 was a very good year and although we didn’t get the quantity, the quality was very good and we sold all of our grapes. 2013 bud break occurred two weeks ahead of the 2012 crop and we harvested the Pinot Noir on September 17th and the Pinot Gris on October 9th – we sold all of our grapes to two wineries.

Our mission is simple: care for the land, make exceptional wine and enjoy life’s journey. Exceptional wine begins in the vineyard; that’s why our vineyard is certified Salmon-Safe and sustainable by L.I.V.E. (Low Input Viticulture and Enology). We believe that sustainable farming makes better wine. Oregon “vineyard lore” suggests that abundant poison oak indicates a great site. Happily for us (except when Mark used a chain saw to remove some massive plants), we’re covered under both schools of thought.

Bois Joli sits on the southwest facing tip of the Amity Hills, overlooking the city of Amity and the Coast Range, directly facing the Van Duzer Corridor.  Befitting its name (“Pretty Woods”), the vineyard is surrounded by a lovely oak/Douglas-fir forest that is rich with wildlife. John and Nodie Ingraham founded the vineyard in 1983 by planting 2 acres of ungrafted Riesling vines (clones unknown), hauling hoses for water and controlling weeds with a push mower.  Rob Kistler and Barb Bond purchased the vineyard in 2009 (half Dijon clones, 777 and 115, and half Pommard clone 91) and 1 acre of Chardonnay (clone 95) in 2013. This is a fairly high elevation site, averaging about 650’. Soils are mostly sedimentary (Willakenzie) with a small area of Jory. The vineyard is LIVE certified.

Carlile’s Crest Vineyard is at 675 to 800 feet elevation and is tucked into the hills facing southwest in the Eola Amity AVA. We are located at the junction between Yampo and Skyline roads on the Yamhill County side. The vineyard consists of 6 planted acres with the first crop harvested in 2016.

Carter Vineyard

The Carter vineyard, owned by Ken and Karen Wright and managed by Seth Miller, is located in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA, 10 miles West of Salem in the Southwest end of the AVA. It was planted in 1983 by Jack and Kathleen Carter at an elevation of 325 feet on a southwestern facing slope. This 21.66 acre vineyard is planted on 9 X 6 foot spacing. Carter is 100% Pinot Noir with 34% Pommard clone, 21% 777 clone, 18% 667 clone, 16% 115 clone and 11% Wadenswil Clone. The soil at Carter is mostly Nekia soil derived from its volcanic parent material located 2 to 3 feet deep within the soil profile. Once roots have fully engaged the parent material, we find that our Pinot noir planted on volcanic sites tends to have more fruit focused aromatics and flavor profiles. Carter Pinot Noir often exhibits dark blue and black fruits supported by firm acidity and moderate tannins.

Situated parallel to the Van Duzer Corridor, this vineyard benefits from the unique interplay of soil, climate, and elevation, creating an unparalleled terroir. Spanning across a pair of west-facing ridges, the vineyard’s soil composition tells a story millions of years in the making—ancient marine sediment from a prehistoric seabed, alluvial loess deposited by the cataclysmic Missoula Floods, and volcanic basalt from fiery eruptions.

It was named one of Oregon’s top ten vineyards by Wine Press Northwest and was in Wine & Spirits as one of the five key vineyards in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA. The vineyard was planted on land inherited from Betty’s parents, Elton and Peggy Ingram — hence the name Elton Vineyard and the address on Ingram Lane. From the onset, “harmony with nature” has played a key role in our practices, so naturally, we have preserved the wild habitat surrounding our vineyard. Oaks, maples, firs and creeks divide our blocks. A buffer zone of trees, grasses, ferns, blackberries and rocks is kept around our creeks to prevent erosion. In the vineyard, a cover crop of mixed grasses, vetch and legumes is used to avoid runoff in the winter, but also to attract a diverse insect population and add nutrients back into the soil.

Wildcat Vineyard is at the northern end of the Eola-Amity Hills AVA, on an east facing slope with views to four of the Cascade peaks. We are on primarily Jory soil between 300 and 400 ft elevation and on late summer afternoons the cool ocean winds blow through the Van Duzer corridor, dropping temperatures dramatically and providing perfect conditions for our young vines. Our first 3 acres of dry farmed Pinot Noir (Wädenswil) were planted in 2019, with a further acre of Chardonnay in 2020.
